A Word on Inspiration from Adam

I’ve been toying with the idea of writing this for a while now and the longer I wait, the more things I see that tell me that I should write it.  Lately, I’ve become very reflective on life and a lot of things going on around me, and I have to say, there is a lot of great things that I see.   I’ve been doing CrossFit for just over five years and I started it because I was out of work at the time and needed something to occupy my time and mind.  I have my good friend Keith to thank for bringing me into this crazy world of fitness.  When we started, we were in his basement doing things that we saw on the internet and didn’t have a ton of formal knowledge on what we were doing.  Eventually, we made the decision to start up at Off The Grid and I have to say, it’s one of the best things that I have done in a long time.

Initially, I think I was like a lot of people when they first walk into a CrossFit gym.  You see these jacked people doing things that you might never imagine that you can do, or crushing a workout that leaves you wondering why the hell you are even there.  Trying to keep up seems like an exercise in futility sometimes, but you continue to show up, because deep down you know you can do it.  As the days turn into weeks and weeks in months, you find yourself making ground and it all starts to make sense.  There is something that a lot of people don’t realize when they first start out and that is that everyone starts somewhere.

Back to the topic at hand, inspiration.  Inspiration comes in many forms depending on who you ask and what they are doing.  It could be something as simple as a beautiful picture, a quote, or a video.  Everyone finds themselves at some point looking for that little bit of something that will lift their spirit or help them soldier through a tough time.  As I said before, I’ve been mentally reflecting on a lot of things going on around me these last few years and I have to say, the decision that I made five years ago has proven to be a great source of inspiration.

A lot of people that get into CrossFit look at the big name people and use that as their source of inspiration.  We’ve all looked at the big names in the sport like Rich Froning, Dan Bailey, or a host of other athletes and thought, wow, I want to be that good someday.  That’s an amazing thing to strive for, but as many of us know, we don’t live that type of life.  We all have our different reasons for showing up to the gym every day, but how often do you really sit back and think about what is actually going on around you on a much smaller scale?

Walk into the gym on any given day and you will see a wide range of people in all different places in their lives.  From the people that we always see at the top of the whiteboard, the new people that are just getting into it, the people that are transforming their lives, even the expecting mothers that have dedicated themselves to staying healthy while awaiting the new arrival.  All of these people offer a source of inspiration that everyone should draw from.

I urge everyone to take a minute the next time they come to the gym and just take a look around.  There is some real magic going on right around us.  Even if someone thinks that they might not be a source of inspiration, let me be the first to tell you that you’re wrong, and you might be exactly what someone else uses as their inspiration.
